Two men sharing a house. One man is of a giving nature. The other of a taking nature.
One man trusts and is to be trusted. One man mistrusts and is little to be trusted—yet he counts on others and the other to trust him.
Both earn about the same. In fact, the trusting man earns more. But the other has more at the end of the day. We understand why.
But wait, there’s more: both men have families. Each has children and a wife, maybe parents and parents-in-law.
Yet still one man gives and gives. And the other takes and takes. The giver’s children hunger. The taker’s children even mock the giver’s children, saying their father is a weakling.
“You are a fool,” we say to the giving fool. “Don’t you know your family comes first?”
Then we talk to the cunning taker too, and he makes some good points, and our heart softens.
