A waiter brings you another cup of coffee for the road. A slave brings you one more before you go. What is the difference?
The waiter has a choice. The slave doesn’t.
Saint Paul writes:
Stand fast and be not held again under the yoke of bondage.
So anything slave-like is bad, right? Well, it depends on whose. A couple of verses on we read:
For you, brethren, have been called unto liberty. Only make not liberty an occasion to the flesh: but by charity of the spirit serve one another.
The word Saint Paul uses here for “serve” (δουλεύετε) means “to serve as a slave.” It is the same word as the yoke you just fled.
You are fleeing the bondage of sin. You follow Jesus and therefore serve each other.
“It may be the devil or it may be the Lord,” Bob Dylan sings, “but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.”
