I am not clever. I do not understand some things. I do not always understand people, and women even less so. I earn a lot of scolding and little money. That much, at least, I understand.
Yet one matter causes me brooding and bewilderment of such magnitude that, by comparison, I appear almost a lover of mankind and a connoisseur of women. – Let me explain this bewilderment of mine!
The bigwigs of Berlin and Brussels have once again (it is, after all, a rhyme of German history) identified the evil Russian as the enemy.
Those same bigwigs also declare the USA, embodied in U.S. President Donald J. Trump, to be an adversary. Trump is described as an ignorant clown and at the same time as a deviously clever fascist. Both are somewhat ironic, given that the rest of the world, in the face of Europe’s suicide, is half alarmed and half laughing. And at the latest when police officers are visiting citizens at home every day because of Facebook posts, or even arresting them, one should be cautious with the fascism label. (Also: anyone who has to pass special laws to prevent citizens from adequately describing their politicians should not lecture others about ridiculousness or fascist tendencies.)
In the spirit of the famous “Accuse the other…” dictum, democracy is being openly abolished in several European countries, while the brave defenders of democracy are declared enemies of that very democracy. By now it is admitted (partly openly, partly implicitly) that immigration into the welfare systems also serves the goal of securing the voter base of elites unpopular with the people against the existing populace. Meanwhile, the EU bureaucracy wants to install preventive censorship of all expressions of opinion (chat control) and preventive control of all payments (digital euro).
I do not understand what plan the “elites” in Berlin and Brussels are pursuing. If you pick fights simultaneously with the USA and Russia, and on top of that economically and socially destroy yourselves, who remains as a friend?
Hmm.
There would, of course, be China.
But does that fit, in terms of political values?
On the one hand, the persecution of dissenting opinions in Europe already today aligns with China, even if Chinese propaganda is far less malicious than, say, German “journalism.”
On the other hand, the Chinese are far less naïve, for example regarding incompatible cultures. They are also probably ahead of Germany when it comes to education, research, and new technologies.
Yet we Baizuos will never be China’s “friends.” If we are lucky, China might soon use us as an extended workbench. We would have much to learn and would also have to clean house thoroughly. But better to be a poor servant under China than a prosperous, self-determined people with Trump as a partner—so at least think our “elites,” certainly not bribed by China.
Ah, of course, an entirely different explanation is conceivable. I do not know.
I am not a particularly clever person. But this I have learned over the years and decades: when something makes no sense, it will not last long.
In moments of meaninglessness, however, the search for meaning is advisable. Yes, investing a bit of time and energy in searching for meaning—that would indeed be truly clever today.
